What can I expect during a Chemical Peel?

From Application to Glow

Before a chemical peel, your specialist may cover your eyes with goggles, tape, or gauze, and may also protect your hair. You don’t need pain relief for a light chemical peel, but if you have a stronger peel, there may be the option of taking a sedative, pain reliever, or using a numbing cream.

During a chemical peel, your Marvel Cosmetic specialist uses a sponge, brush, gauze, or cotton ball to apply the Glytone chemical solution. While the solution is settling on your skin, you may feel a mild stinging sensation.

Then, your Marvel Cosmetic specialist gently applies a neutralizing wash or solution to remove the chemical solution from your treated skin. Your specialist might apply cool compresses and provide you with a handheld fan to help soothe your skin. The healing process following a light peel typically takes one to seven days.

Healing from a medium or deep peel can take anywhere from 14 days to several weeks. To achieve a beautiful complexion with a chemical peel, call Marvel Cosmetic MedSpa.

The Science of a Radiant First Layer

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. A chemical solution—such as alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), beta hydroxy acid (BHA), glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, TCA, or phenol—is applied to the skin’s surface using a cotton-tipped applicator or brush.

This solution breaks down the bonds between dead skin cells, causing the treated skin to eventually peel and reveal smoother, healthier skin beneath. With a chemical peel treatment, your Marvel Cosmetic specialist carefully applies a special chemical solution to your skin to remove the top layers. The healthy new skin cells that develop following a chemical peel reveal younger-looking, smoother, and firmer skin.

Chemical peels are used to treat a wide range of skin concerns, including acne scars, rough skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, and much more. Peels are categorized by depth:

  • Light Chemical Peels: Use AHAs like glycolic or lactic acid to gently exfoliate the top layer of skin
  • Medium Chemical Peels: Use TCA to penetrate the middle layer and treat moderate sun damage or pigmentation
  • Deep Chemical Peels: Use phenol and croton oil to remove deep scars and severe wrinkles for dramatic results

Am I a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are appropriate for many skin types, though depth and ingredients must be chosen carefully—especially for patients with darker skin tones, sensitive skin, or problematic skin conditions.

You may be a good candidate if you want to treat acne scars, uneven skin tone, or visible signs of aging. However, you should avoid peels if you have active cold sores, recent facial surgery, or are using retinoids or topical treatments like benzoyl peroxide.

Chemical Peel Recovery

Post-Peel Tips for Better Results

Recovery time depends on the depth of your peel:

  • Light Peels: May cause mild flaking and redness for 1–3 days
  • Medium Peels: Can cause moderate peeling and redness for 5–7 days
  • Deep Peels: Involves extensive peeling, swelling, and healing over 10–14 days

During recovery, you’ll be advised to avoid sun exposure, excessive sweating, and applying makeup until your provider clears it. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and follow all post-peel care instructions to protect your new skin and maintain improved skin results.

Chemical Peel Results

Results like smoother texture and more even tone can be visible after just one treatment.

For deeper concerns, a series of peels may be recommended to achieve desired results. Patients with acne scars, deep wrinkles, or uneven pigmentation often benefit from multiple treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Your skin will appear brighter, clearer, and more radiant as the peeling skin reveals healthier tissue beneath. With continued care and sun protection, results can last several months or longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients experience noticeable results after a single treatment, but multiple treatments may be necessary for more severe acne scars or uneven skin tone. Your provider will recommend a plan tailored to your specific skin concerns.

Makeup should be avoided until the skin has fully healed. Light peels may allow makeup use after a few days, while deeper peels may require a full week or more before applying any products.

Most patients feel a tingling or warm sensation during the peel. Deeper peels may cause a slight stinging or temporary discomfort, but numbing options or pain management may be used if needed.

Direct sun exposure should be avoided until the skin is fully healed. Use daily sun protection and wear hats or protective clothing to prevent sun damage and pigmentation issues.

Unlike facial scrubs that use physical exfoliation, chemical peels use acid-based solutions to deeply exfoliate the skin at a cellular level. Chemical peels offer more powerful and targeted results for improving skin appearance.
