IPL Treatment

Even Out. Brighten Up.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a light-based treatment that targets pigmentation, redness, and sun damage to reveal clearer, more even-toned skin. Less intense than deeper laser treatments, IPL offers brighter skin without lengthy downtimes.

What Is IPL?

Glow Smarter

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a light-based technology used to treat a wide range of cosmetic skin conditions, like skin discoloration and sun-related damage. Unlike lasers, which use a focused beam, IPL delivers broad-spectrum light that targets multiple chromophores, making it especially effective for addressing pigment, redness, and vascular lesions across the face, neck, chest, and hands.

This treatment is sometimes referred to as a “photofacial” because it helps reduce uneven tone and gives your skin a more radiant, camera-ready appearance.

IPL at a Glance

  • Brighter Skin – Reduces sun spots, redness, and pigmentation
  • Quick Treatment – Sessions take just 20–30 minutes
  • Minimal Downtime – Resume normal activities the same day
  • Non-Invasive – No incisions or needles

How many treatments will I need?

IPL therapy is our go-to for age spots and sunspots.

It’s also used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne, pigmentation, and redness caused by rosacea or telangiectasia. Recovery from an IPL varies, but it usually heals in less than a week. A series of IPLs is recommended to achieve the best outcome. Schedule a complimentary consultation with us to see if you are a candidate for IPL.

What Is the IPL Treatment Like?

Brighter Days Ahead

Your IPL procedure begins with a consultation to determine if IPL is right for your skin tone and concerns.

On the day of treatment, we’ll cleanse your skin and apply a cooling gel to help conduct the light pulses. Protective eyewear is used during the session.

Using a handheld IPL device, your provider delivers precise flashes of light to targeted areas. Most patients describe the sensation as a light snap or flick. This facial rejuvenation process typically takes less than 30 minutes, and you can return to your normal routine immediately.

More Than Just Redness

What Conditions Does IPL Treat?

IPL is a versatile treatment used to achieve a significant reduction in a range of skin pigmentation- and redness-related issues, including:

  • Sun Damage and Aging Skin – Light targets melanin to reduce brown patches and freckles
  • Rosacea and Facial Redness – Minimizes red patches and capillary visibility
  • Broken Capillaries – Treats visible spider veins and vascular lesions
  • Uneven Skin Tone – Helps improve tone and clarity across face, chest, and hands
  • Hyperpigmentation – Reduces discoloration from inflammation or previous acne

The Clear-Skin Confidence Boost

Am I a Candidate for IPL?

IPL skin rejuvenation is best suited for patients with lighter skin tones (typically Fitzpatrick I–III) who struggle with pigmentation, redness, or signs of sun damage.

For patients with darker skin types or who are currently tanned (including those who use tanning beds), an alternative treatment may be more suitable to avoid complications such as hyperpigmentation. Individuals with active skin infections, recent sunburns, or those taking certain medications (such as Accutane) may need to delay treatment. We’ll review your full skin history during your consultation to determine the best path forward for you.

IPL Recovery

Keep It Simple

Post-treatment, you may experience some skin sensitivity, redness, warmth, or swelling (similar to a mild sunburn) lasting a few hours to a day.

Brown spots may darken and flake off over the next several days as your skin renews. It’s important to avoid direct sun exposure and wear sunscreen daily to protect your results. You can resume most daily activities immediately after treatment; however, we recommend waiting 24 hours before wearing makeup or using active ingredients, such as retinol or acids.

IPL Results

Some improvement may be visible after just one session, but most patients achieve their best results after 3 to 5 treatments, spaced approximately one month apart.

As pigmented lesions break up and your skin tone evens out, you’ll notice a smoother, more transparent, and more radiant complexion. Because IPL encourages collagen stimulation, you may also notice softer fine lines and improved skin texture over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients see noticeable improvements after 3–5 sessions, spaced about 4 weeks apart. The number of treatments depends on your skin type and the severity of your concerns.

The treatment feels like a light rubber band snap against the skin. Most patients find it easily tolerable, especially with the use of the cooling gel and its brief duration.

IPL can help improve the appearance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne, but it’s not a primary treatment for deep acne scarring. Microneedling or laser resurfacing may be more appropriate in those cases.

Downtime is minimal. You may have some redness or darkening of spots, but most patients resume normal activities immediately.

The face, neck, chest, and hands are the most common treatment zones. However, IPL can be used on almost any area affected by sun damage or uneven pigmentation.

Chemical peels are generally better for improving skin texture, wrinkles, and acne scars through exfoliation, while IPL treatments excel at reducing redness, broken capillaries, and brown spots by targeting pigmentation and blood vessels. Consulting with a skin care professional is key to determining which option, or combination, is best for your unique needs.

Yes! Intense pulsed light therapy can be used to treat unwanted hair, targeting follicles through pigment cells. It is most effective in patients with lighter skin tones and dark hair. If you are concerned about unwanted hair, we can discuss your options for laser hair removal during your consultation.
